Joe Satriani - Satchurated: Live in Montreal

Awhile back I was TDY in Northern California, and I was doing what I normally do while I’m there with nothing better to do – I was wandering about the independent music stores I could find, waiting for the one CD that would jump out and say “buy me!” While I was doing said wandering, one of the people working in the store played a familiar tune. It was Joe Satriani’s Flying in a Blue Dream. This version was live, and I thought it sounded pretty good. I always liked that song. Now fast forward a few weeks to another TDY, this one in Phoenix. I wondered through a nearby Best Buy and spotted Satriani’s new live 2-CD set, Satchurated: Live in Montreal. After I spotted it, I heard the little voice say “buy me!” This is quite a step for me because many years ago I tired of Joe Satriani’s music. I had Surfing With the Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream, and The Extremist. This was so long ago that Satch still had a full head of hair. I had these albums, but the songs all started to sound the same to me. When all the songs start to sound the same, I lose quickly interest.

The guy is an astounding guitarist, but here’s my beef with Satch’s music. Have you watched the movie Amadeus? Mozart presented a four-hour piece of music, during which the Hapsburg Emperor yawned. When Mozart asked the Emperor what he thought of his music, the Emperor said “too many notes.” That is my criticism of Satch’s music. But I bought Satchurated anyway to see if any of his music since The Extremist has mellowed any. I also wanted to see if my own attitude to his music has changed in almost twenty years. In short, my attitude is unchanged. I can take Satch’s music in small doses, but after hearing one shredfest after another, that “sameness” that I mentioned earlier was still there. Satchurated comes roaring out the gates with Ice 9, and doesn’t let up until Pyrrhic Victoria – nine songs later. The first thing resembling a slow song doesn’t come until the second disc’s Littleworth Lane. For those keeping track, it’s the seventeenth song in the set. That’s a long time to wait for a change of pace. One of his more deliberate and better known songs, Always With You, Always With Me doesn’t show up until near the end of the set. I read one author say this of Satch’s live presentation – “Joe Satriani knows almost everything about playing the electric guitar. He knows very little about how to effectively pace a concert… most of Satriani's solos emphasize technique over feeling.” Let me echo that sentiment – I tried to watch a Chickenfoot show on the Palladia channel awhile ago. For the first time ever, a rock show bored me. Need I say more?

Not all is lost on Satchurated. There is some fine music here – one just has to have the patience to sit and wait for it. Songs I really like – the aforementioned Flying in a Blue Dream, Dream Song, Premonition, Revelation [I’m sensing a theme here…], God Is Crying [a good guitar-keyboard duel with keyboardist Mike Keneally, the same guy who used to work with Frank Zappa], Andalusia [acoustic!], War, Why, Pyrrhic Victoria, Crystal Planet, Satch Boogie [ALWAYS a good one]. There are two new studio tracks at the end – Two Sides to Every Story and The Golden Room. Satch successfully resists the urge to shred his brains out and produced something [dare I say] melodic.  These two songs are very, very good. As a result of listening to this album, will I be going out of my mind to acquire all the solo stuff and the Chickenfoot stuff there is? Carol will be glad to read this – the answer to that question is “no.” This CD will serve as my fix for wanting to hear awe-inspiring technique, if I don’t already get that fix from the otherworldly guitarists that I listen to [David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, et al]. Since this a 2-CD set, I’m glad I paid only $14.99 + tax for it. Otherwise I think I’d really be pissed. If non-stop shredding and jaw-dropping technique is your thing, this collection is for you. Satchurated: Live in Montreal is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some excellent songs here, but those take up about only half of the album. I wanted to like this album, but after hearing a few songs I want something else in the CD player. It’s small doses of Satch for this guy.

Vicky Donor (2012)

Genre: Comedy/Romance/Drama

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Anu Kapoor, Yami Gautam, Dolly Alhuwalia, Kamlesh Gill

Conservative families, social issues and lack of acceptance of modern ideologies is a sure shot formula for a Bollywood movies success. Vicky Donor explores the preconceptions of sperm donation that prevail within the conservative Indian society and revealing its true intentions. Vicky Arora (Khurrana) is jobless and lazy and has no motivation or direction in life. His widowed mother runs a beauty parlor and is fed up of Vicky's high cost of living and no income. Dr. Chaddha (Kapoor) is an infertility specialist who cant seem to find the right sperm donor to fulfill the demands of his high profile clients. All his advertisements for sperm donors bear no fruit since the more healthy and versatile people look down upon sperm donation and the only ones who come forward are penniless and jobless people looking to make some easy money. One fine day, Dr. Chaddha spots Vicky and his sixth sense tells him that he is the man he is looking for. A sperm test reveals that his mojo is in top order and after a lot of persuasion and nagging, Vicky becomes a sperm donor. He soon realises that he can make a whole lot of money out of it and makes it his profession. Vicky eventually falls in love with banker Ashima Roy (Gautam) and wishes to marry her, much to the despise of Dr. Chaddha who sees Vicky as his only source of income. The story touches upon the social stigma in a humorous and fun manner but suffers from having a conventional foundation. Initial success, problems arise, the downfall and the eventual happy ending are all very predictable. Its an outline that almost every movie on the planet works on which makes it lose its traction and interest and hence is not unique inn itself. John Abraham has managed to produce a good entertainer with above average performances but still needs to work hard if it needs to make a sounding impact at the box office.

Thumbs up: Performances, humour and an all-round urban entertainer
Thumbs down: Predictable plot outline, gets a tad boring at places

What Do All Kentucky Derby Heroes Have In Common?

GoofyEveryone has their own strategy for deciphering the Kentucky Derby. Some handicappers spend hours deciphering speed ratings, pace scenarios, pouring over pedigree charts and past performances with dreams and hopes of scoring a big payoff.

Below are some intriguing and essential facts that should help handicappers define their line-up of Derby horses.

PEDIGREE

PED1Pedigree should the first step by handicappers to figuring out whom to keep on the Derby list. It is essential to identify the horses that will love ten furlongs, those who could finish in the money and the ones that couldn’t get the distance with an oxygen mask. The most important pedigree factor in deciding if your Derby hopeful is a contender or pretender is the progeny stakes records of the sires and damsires.

It is generally accepted that a horse’s damsire and female family impart stamina and class. This is the most important aspect in determining if your Derby hopeful can handle the distance. In every instance in the last eleven years, every Kentucky Derby winner’s sire or damsire’s daughters had previously produced a stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles. In all except once instance since 2000, the damsire had produced a mare that bore a 1 ¼ mile stakes winner. In seven of eleven instances, the Kentucky Derby champ was a dual qualifier, that is, both the sire and damsire had previously produced at least one stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles.

Dual Qualifier:

2000 Fusaichi Pegasus

2001 Monarchos

2002 War Emblem

2004 Smarty Jones

2006 Barbaro

2007 Street Sense

2010 Super Saver

Single qualifier by damsire:

2005 Giacomo

2008 Big Brown

2009 Mine that Bird

2011 Animal Kingdom

Single qualifier by sire:

2003 Funny Cide

This year’s Kentucky Derby field includes six horses who have no stakes winners produced by the damsires’ daughters at 1 ¼ miles or beyond. There are also six contestants by stallions who have yet to sire a stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles. The Kentucky Derby Pedigree Analysis Ebook shows how many stakes winners the sire/damsire have produced in the last 12 years for every Derby entrant.

TRACK SURFACE

Track surface can be another concern.

Scattered thunderstormMuddyTracks are forecasted  Saturday. It’s doubtful that we’ll see the quagmire that was present in the 2009 and 2010 Kentucky Derbies, but should the track be off or labeled “good,” the handicapper should again turn to pedigree to figure out who has experience or breeding for the mud. Both Mine That Bird and Super Saver had superior pedigrees for the mud the years that they won their respective Derbies. This year, nine Derby hopefuls have raced over an off track and five were winners. Other colts, such as Bodemeister and Alpha, have superior mud breeding.

FINAL PREP RACE

cartoonraceAn important factor in determining the current form of Kentucky Derby contenders is how they finished in their final prep race before the Derby. In the last 11 years, only two Derby champs finished worse than second in their final prep. Only three Derby champs didn’t win or place in a Grade 1. Six of the Derby heroes won their final Derby prep:

2000 Fusaichi Pegasus (Wood Memorial (G-1)

2001 Monarchos (Florida Derby G-1)

2002 War Emblem (Illinois Derby G-3)

2003 Funny Cide (2nd, Wood Memorial G-1)

2004 Smarty Jones (Arkansas Derby G-1)

2005 Giacomo (4th Santa Anita Derby G-1)

2006 Barbaro (Florida Derby G-1)

2007 Street Sense (2nd Blue Grass G-1)

2008 Big Brown (Florida Derby G-1)

2009 Mine that Bird (4th Sunland Derby G-3)

2010 Super Saver (2nd Arkansas Derby G-1)

2011 Animal Kingdom (Spiral Stakes G-3)

Going back to 1988, this same precedent holds true. Only two Kentucky Derby winners didn’t win or place in their last start, 1993 winner Sea Hero and 1995 winner Thunder Gulch. 1990 winner Unbridled won the Florida Derby, but was third in the Blue Grass Stakes and 1999 winner Charismatic was fourth in the Santa Anita Derby but won the Lexington Stakes, indicating horses that were peaking at the right time.

The runners-up in the Kentucky Derby also fit this profile. All except three colts won or placed in their last effort, which was either a Grade 1 or Grade 2 Stakes race. The colts who didn’t fit this profile (2000 – Aptitude, 3rd in FL Derby; 2001 – Invisible Ink, 3rd in FL Derby; 2005 Closing Argument, 3rd in Blue Grass) finished third in a Grade 1 Stakes and placed second in the Kentucky Derby.

Seven horses in this year’s Kentucky Derby don’t fit the final prep profile for winning the Kentucky Derby:

El Padrino (4th Florida Derby)

Liaison (6th Santa Anita Derby)

Prospective (6th Blue Grass Stakes)

Optimizer (9th Arkansas Derby)

Rousing Sermon (3rd Louisiana Derby)

Sabercat (3rd Arkansas Derby)

Union Rags (3rd Florida Derby)

RUNNING STYLE

Race2Here’s another important fact. Think those one run plodders are the horses to watch in the Derby? Guess again. Every Derby hero has been close to the lead by the quarter-pole and since 1950, 77% of the winners had the lead at the eighth-pole. 98% of the horses who have the lead at the eighth-pole finish in the trifecta. These stats prove that the Derby winner must have a brilliant three furlong explosion and that jockey timing is everything. The majority of the Kentucky Derby winners have tactical speed. Only when there is dominant speed in the race (such as 2001 & 2005) does a stone closer have a legitimate shot at winning, and even then, that closer must have a strong three furlong move.

So, the research proves that every Kentucky Derby winner in the last eleven years has a sire and/or damisire that has produced previous stakes winners at 1 ¼ miles or farther. The Derby winner has won or placed second in its final prep and has enough tactical speed to gain the lead by the eighth-pole. Makes it easy to pick the winner, doesn’t it?

Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (2009)

Genre: Documentary/Musical/Drama/Adventure

Starring: Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Nicko McBrain, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith

Band tours are very typical in the manner in which they are executed and so are the concert movies that are made thereafter. Tour locations, clippings of performances, behind the scenes footage and interviews with various persons is the norm. Iron Maiden's Somewhere Back In Time World Tour in 2008 was special, not because of the locations or the style but because of the manner in which they were going to execute it. Bands usually have to pay huge travel bills on world tours for carrying the huge necessary cargo along with the long line of essential crew members that need to be present. Iron Maiden decided to innovate and combine the two by modifying a Boeing 757 which could carry both the crew and the cargo on one airline with lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson piloting the plane. The band toured 4 continents, 12 countries and 21 cities which took 45 days and thousands of miles to cover. The band covered remote cities that other mainstream bands can never even think of. From large metros like Los Angeles, Tokyo and Mumbai to Bogota, San Jose and Moneterry, the band covered a wide array of locations unheard of and unimaginable. They toured almost every South American country in its first leg and later went to tour USA, Western Canada, Europe, parts of Asia and once again toured the countries of South America that they previously left behind. This documentary focuses on the first leg of the tour, before they began the USA tour. The movie starts off on an interesting note, highlighting their attempts at fulfilling this landmark achievement. As the movie progress, it becomes hugely repetitive with similar footage in every city, showing crazy fans and head banging maniacs with excerpts from band members. Its a great watch for maiden-heads and rock fans, whilst others can still attempt at watching it and realise the marvels of the rock and roll circuit. Irons up!

Thumbs up: Fantastic footage, adrenaline rushing performances
Thumbs down: Repetitive format that gets to you after a while

The Avengers (3D) (2012)

Genre: Fantasy/Science-fiction/Action/Adventure

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson

Marvel, finally having run out of ingenious ideas to create more bizarre super heroes, has decided to mhx all the ingredients into one huge pot and just boil, stir, simmer and serve. The amalgamation includes Thor (Hemsworth) from Thor, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) from Iron Man, Dr. Bruce Banner (Ruffalo) from Hulk and Steve Rogers (Evans) from  Captain America. The movie is in continuation to Thor with Loki (Hiddleston) seeking revenge from his brother which he intends to do so by destroying Earth and obtaining Tesseract, an unknown self-sufficient energy source with powers unlimited. With Tesseract gone missing, Dr. Banner is recruited by the Black Widow (Johansson) a smooth-talker, to help develop a way to locate it. Captain America has recently been woken up after being frozen for almost half a century and Tony Stark is just simply summoned to make his presence felt. Thor drops from the sky in search of his brother and hence they together form The Avengers, a team of heroes out to save the planet for sure death and destruction. The plot has absolutely nothing attached to it except for the usual good over evil tale with predictable climaxes and outcomes. Many of the more popular characters of Marvel were left out of this series, perhaps due to storyline or marketing purposes. The movie does expect its audiences to have seen the respective movies of all the characters at least once just so that they are in sync with their background and history. Even if you haven't, you wont miss out on too much but its helpful simply to understand the more finer details of every character. All in all, the movie is pure entertainment and does not intend to do anything else apart from that.

Thumbs up: Special effects, action and entertainment
Thumbs down: Bland plot, not as exciting as it sounds

Hancock (2008)

Genre: Action/Fantasy/Drama/Romance

Starring: Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, Eddie Marson

Everyone has seen the invincible super hero who brings an end to evil and saves the world, but who is gonna tell you the other side of the story? John Hancock (Smith) is man with super-human strength, can fly, can easily regenerate and is an alcoholic. Unlike the conventional super heroes, Hancock is hated by the citizens of LA for the collateral destruction he causes while trying to nab the bad guys and everyone wishes he would just leave. John is not particularly fond of the public himself and openly hates them back. Ray Embrey (Bateman) is a PR consultant who is struggling to get a good pitch across to his clients when he suddenly finds himself in a life-threatening situation and is saved at the very last minute by Hancock. Although he does also derail an entire freight train, Ray wants to thank him for saving his life and realises that if he could, as a PR consultant, change the way people look at him, he would not only repay Hancock but also give a huge boost to his struggling career. This idea does not go down well with Ray's wife Mary (Theron) and takes a little bit more than just convincing John to listen to him. The movies attempt at projecting a different super hero than what one reads in comic books is achieved to a certain degree but is still not perfect. Lose ends and some unanswered questions continue but the movie might not have been made for awards and is more focused towards pure entertainment. It does deliver action-packed performances, destructive scenes and the typical Will Smith humour and if it this that you need then that is what you will get. Don't expect anything more.

Thumbs up: Entertaining, a non-conventional super hero
Thumbs down: Lose, loses traction after a while

Rating: 6.0/10

The Baxter (2005)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Starring: Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, Michelle Williams, Justin Theroux

If you thought your love life is messed up, you might want to know about the story of Elliot Sherman (Showalter). Elliot calls himself a baxter, or someone who has lost their girlfriend to her ex-boyfriend who casually walks back into her life and sweeps his lady love off her feet. Not once, but twice and it just happened the third time. Elliot was to marry Caroline (Banks) until her high school crush Bradley (Theroux) arrives at the wedding and proposes to her leaving Elliot in a position he is no stranger to. The movie flashes back and goes on to tell you exactly how this awkward situation arose and what comes thereafter. Cecil (Williams) is Elliot's temporary secretary whom he grows fond of and confines his fears of getting dumped again when he is all set to marry Caroline and bring her into his life. The movie builds on an interesting concept, different than what a normal romance comedy would be and attempts at being realistic rather than being idealistic. The movie suffers with being slow and stretched and since it gives away the climax at the very beginning, you know exactly what to expect and hence one is simply expected to enjoy the journey till the end. That, sadly does not happen and your thankful the movie is over rather than getting up with a broad smile and a sense of enjoyment.

Thumbs up: Good idea to explore upon
Thumbs down: Stretched, slow and boring

Rating: 5.7/10
